Guidelines for Activism Curriculum Grant Applications
The goal of this project is to create a series of lessons that can be easily adopted into the public relations classroom. While a body of academic literature continues to grow around activism and activist public relations, there are few resources available for integrating the public relations of activism into classrooms and curriculum.
Faculty are invited to submit a grant proposal to develop one or more modules related to activism and public relations. Topics may include:
► Social movements and public relation history
► Ethics of activism
► Activist theories
► Parallels between public interest communication, cause communication, and activism
► Evaluation of activist/social movement success
► Social media and activism
► Brand activism
Other ideas for topics related to activism and public relations will also be accepted. Modules that center the voices and experiences of marginalized publics are especially encouraged.
The Center will offer a $2,000 honorarium for each module, half paid when the contract is signed and the other on delivery of the completed module. Honorarium payments can be shared by co-authors.
Grant proposal guidelines
Proposals should include all of the following in a Word or PDF file and should be uploaded on the Page Center website.
► Module description: Proposal should include a description of a two-lesson module that the applicant will develop if funded. It should include a primary lesson on the topic chosen from the call for grant’s list of module topics as well as a secondary lesson that will supplement the primary lesson.
► Learning objectives: Detail the learning objectives for both lessons.
► Lesson structure: Provide the outline of the lessons that you will create, possibly including purpose, materials, body of lesson, key concepts, activities and evaluation.
► Videos: Authors will be required to create a short video introducing the topics in the lesson. This may include a video of you sharing key ideas or a video illustrating concepts in the lesson (the Center will provide guidance of video creation if needed). Explain what you will include in your videos.
► Case study: Suggest and justify a case study that you will include in the lesson.
► Activities: Describe activities that you would include in the lesson and how these would help satisfy the learning objectives.
► Assessment: Explain how you would assess learning in the lesson.
Please include your teaching philosophy and curriculum vitae with the grant proposal materials.
Completed modules will include specific elements, to create a parallel between lessons, so faculty can more easily adopt the materials into the classroom. Please note, authors do not need to include this content in the grant proposal. These materials will be developed after proposals are accepted.
Final modules will include the following:
► Two lesson plans to be shared with faculty who choose to adopt the materials into the classroom
► PowerPoint to be used by faculty
► Written content for students that will appear on the final lesson website
► Two original videos (one for each lesson) that introduce the topics of the lessons
► Case study that illustrates key topics for the lesson
► Discussion questions
► Digital resources for further information
► Activities with grading guide
► Quiz/test assessment with answers
Curriculum grant timeline:
► Application materials must be electronically submitted on or before Jan. 15, 2021.
► Scholars will be notified of the selection committee's decisions on March 15, 2021.
► Lesson 1 of your module is due by July 15, 2021.
► Lesson 2 of your module is due by Oct. 15, 2021.
► Module launch will be Jan. 1, 2022.
