John Gastil, professor and head of the Department of Communication Arts and Sciences and Political Science, presents the Communications Colloquium with the session titled, "Public Deliberation in Initiative Elections to Transcend Political Biases: Good and Bad News from the Citizens' Initiative Review in Oregon, Arizona and Colorado."

Mike Williams, a columnist for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, will be speak with students and visit classes during a three-day campus visit coordinated by the Department of Journalism.

Two days of on-campus activities for members of the Advertising/Public Relations Alumni Board. Sunday includes: new member orientation (2:15-2:45 p.m.), a board meeting (3-5 p.m.) and a student mentoring event (6 p.m.). On Monday, the schedule features breakfast with faculty (7:45 a.m.) and classroom visits.

Lisa Borders, chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation, will present "Women, Water and Well Being: How Coca-Cola is Confronting Global Community Challenges" at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library. The session -- presented by the Information & Communication Technologies for Development Consotrium, the Don Davis Program in Ethical Leadership and University Libraries -- is free and open to the public. Borders is the chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation and vice president of Global Community Connections. She was also president of the Grady Health Foundation, the fundraising arm of Grady Health System in Atlanta. Borders has worked in her community primarily focusing on education, family issues, healthcare and housing.

Learn how to properly prepare electronic files of graphic design projects, and what to expect when when printing to different output devices, color (Pantone, CMYK, RGB), resolution, etc. Two production coordinators from Penn State's on-campus printing facility, the Multimedia Printing Center, will provide an overview of the services and capabilities of a typical printing facility, and how they work with clients to achieve their expectations with electronic files, whether they are printed or just kept in an electronic form (PDF, JPEGs, etc.). Free session open to all students coordinated by faculty member Ron Smith.

Michael Bremer, director of student programs for American Pavilion Internships at the Cannes Film Festival and the Cannes Lion Festival of Creativity, will be the featured guest for a free public session sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the College of Communications.

Carnegie Cinematheque: Screening of "Salt of the Earth" (Michael Wilson, U.S., 1954). Made by Hollywood Blacklist filmmakers, this semi-documentary tale of a mineworkers strike in New Mexico is also a landmark in feminist cinema. This screening is for educational purposes only.

Kim Schaller ('80), executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Hershey Entertainment and Resorts (HERCO), will discuss how she successfully markets Hershey as "The Sweetest Place on Earth" and a year-round destination, drawing visitors to the hotels, theme park, holiday-themed events and concerts and events in the Giant Center and Hersheypark Stadium.
