Comm Career Conversation: Shannon Furman

Alumna Shannon Furman ('03 Journ), an award-winning producer for NFL Films, will be the featured guest in a converation about communications careers, her path to success and tips for those interested in the field. The session, intended mostly for undergraduates, is free and open to the public. A three-time Emmy Award winner, Furman has worked on several NFL-related series ("A Footbal Life," "Hard Knocks," "Sound F/X") and covered several major events, including the Super Bowl (five times) and the NFL Draft.

To Tweet or not to Tweet. That is the question for some Pennsylvania legislators who want to stay in touch with their constituencies. But when does promoting governance edge into promoting re-election? How do state legislators and their pubic relations staff members use the tools of social media in both an effective and ethical way? What are the rules of the road? The Pennsylvania legislature is currently asking this question and developing ethics guidelines for the next generation of political communication in the state. Taking the lead is Erik Arneson, communications and policy director for State Sen. Dominic Pileggi, and watching closely is Brittany Foster, a political communications expert with Triad Strategies in Harrisburg. They will provide an update and discuss the issues.

AdClub: MARC USA Recruitment Event

MARC USA's recruiting consultants, Rob Throckmorton and Molly Daniels ('08), will make their annual pilgrimage to Penn State to discuss MARC USA's internship and career opportunities and show a reel of the agency's best creative work. While on campus, they will be interviewing students for possible future internship and full-time career opportunities during the day on Monday, Oct. 20, and Tuesday, Oct. 21. Interviews will be scheduled through the Office of Internships and Career Placement in the College of Communications. Students should check their CareerAdviser emails for how to submit applications.

"Water, Women and Well Being"

Lisa Borders, chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation, will present "Women, Water and Well Being: How Coca-Cola is Confronting Global Community Challenges" at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13, in Foster Auditorium of Paterno Library. The session -- presented by the Information & Communication Technologies for Development Consotrium, the Don Davis Program in Ethical Leadership and University Libraries -- is free and open to the public. Borders is the chair of the Coca-Cola Foundation and vice president of Global Community Connections. She was also president of the Grady Health Foundation, the fundraising arm of Grady Health System in Atlanta. Borders has worked in her community primarily focusing on education, family issues, healthcare and housing.

Design and Printing Process Workshop

Learn how to properly prepare electronic files of graphic design projects, and what to expect when when printing to different output devices, color (Pantone, CMYK, RGB), resolution, etc. Two production coordinators from Penn State's on-campus printing facility, the Multimedia Printing Center, will provide an overview of the services and capabilities of a typical printing facility, and how they work with clients to achieve their expectations with electronic files, whether they are printed or just kept in an electronic form (PDF, JPEGs, etc.). Free session open to all students coordinated by faculty member Ron Smith.
