Digital Life, A Perspective from Theory and Practice

Location: Freeman Auditorium, HUB-Robeson Center
Experts from academia and industry will shine their light on core topics raised in "The Circle" by Dave Eggers. The panel will consist of: Sascha Meinrath, the Palmer Chair of Telecommunications, director of X-Lab and a specialist on online communication; Liz Cantalamessa from Facebook; and Angel Grant from LG Electronics. Both Cantalamessa and Grant have built solid experience in online advertising and social media from business. Johanna Slot of the Smeal College of Business will moderate the panel and discuss topics in "The Circle," including privacy and the use of socially shared data as well as building a career in a fast moving industry. The event is free open to the public.

"How to Break Into the Sports Industry"

A panel discussion featuring Penn State alumni as part of the Comm Career Conversation series, presented by the Office of Internships and Career Services in the College of Communications. This free session, designed to offer career advice to students about how to stand out in a tough communications industry job market, includes: Jennifer James ('90), assistant athletic director, event management for Penn State Athletics; Mike Neligan ('05), vice president of marketing for Excel Sports management in New York City; and Dan Solomon ('04) of Penn State Sports Properties.

Pulitzer Prize Panel

In observance of the 100th anniversary of the Pulitzer Prizes, the Department of Journalism presents a panel discussion featuring Pulizer Prize winners with Pennsylvania connections. Panelists are: Jacqueline Larma, Associated Press East Coast photo chief who was part of a photo team that won a Pulitzer in 1995; Bill Marimow, editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer, who won a Pulitzer for investigative reporting in 1985; and Barbara Laker and Wendy Ruderman of the Philadelphia Daily News, who won a Pulitzer for investigative reporting in 2010.

"The 2016 Campaign: Is it the Media's Fault?"

Free public lecture by Brooke Gladstone, host and managing editor of NPR's "On the Media," which has won numerous awards, including the Bart Richards Award for Media Criticism presented by the College of Communications at Penn State. Gladstone will discuss the current election cycle and the media's role and impact in what's happening with the campaign. She is the recipient of two Peabody Awards, a National Press Club Award and an Overseas Pres Club Award. Her visit is sponsored by the McCourtney Institute for Democracy.

Student Entrepreneurship Fair

A special session for students to find out about classes, competitions and money, events, mentoring, and organizations related to entrepreneurship at Penn State. The event will allow students to meet local entrepreneurs (including student founders), e-ship professors and start-up mentors. Plus, there will be free consultants in law, business, social media and more. Participants can tour Happy Valley Launchbox and New Leaf Initiative.
