COMM Career Conversations series presents "Major Mismatch: What to Do When Your Major Dosn't Match Your Career Interests" featuring three College of Commuications graduates -- Lindsay Miller ('11 Journ), Patrick Bunting ('13 Telecom) and Jessica Blitzer ('14 Telecom). Each of the three studk with their course of study and landed careers in areas not directly related to their majors. The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the College of Communications Student Council.

"Assisted Aging"

As part of a spotlight on student research, College of Communications graduate student Eun Hwa Jung will present with Distinguished Professor S. Shyam Sundar during the University-wise Research Unplugged series. The free public presentation is titled "Assisted Aging: How Smart Technology Will Change How We Grow Old" and will feature a discussion abotu how smart devices and personal robotics will assist people as they age with everything from house chores and entertainment to compainionship and self-care tasks.

A free public lecture by Christian Sandvig, an associate professor at the University of Michigan. The lecture -- “The Awakenings of the Filtered: Algorithmic Personalization in Social Media and Beyond” -- is co-sponsored by the College of Communications and University Libraries. In his lecture Sandvig will argure that media of all kinds have been transformed to include automatic selection and ranking as a basic part of their operation. The Pockrass Lecture was named after the late Professor Robert M. Pockrass, a member of Penn State's journalism faculty from 1948 to 1977. Pockrass, who specialized in public opinion and popular culture, served as the graduate officer and taught radio news writing.

"American Indians, The Media and Team Sports"

Free public panel discussion focusing on American Indian cultures and the effects of media and team sports with American Indian imagery. Panelists are: Charlene Teters, a member of the Spokane Tribe; Richie Plass, member of Menominee Tribal Nation; and Mike Wise, a senior writer for ESPN's The Undefeated. John Sanchez, an associate professor in the Department of Journalism and member of the ESPN; and member of Nde Apache Tribal Nation, will moderate.

Lecture and question-and-answer session with Leezel Tanglao, senior multi-platform editor for CNN Money. Her presentation, titled "Creating Your Metric Success: How to Navigate the Changing Digital World," is free and open to the public. Tanglao leads the CNN Money digital war room, and oversees the presentation and packaging of CNN Money multimedia editorial content across desktop, mobile and social. She previously worked at CBSNews.com, VICENews, NowThis, ABCNews.com, KCBS/KCAL and The Press-Enterprise newspaper in Southern California. She is an active member of the Asian American Journalists Association and the Online News Association. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Loyola Marymount University, and received her master’s degree from UCLA. Lecture presented by the Office of Multicultural Affairs in the College of Communications and AHANA, with support of the University Park Allocation Committee.
