Biography

Barbara Bird retired in 2014 after 17 years as a faculty member at Penn State.

During her tenure, Professor Bird taught screenwriting, intermediate, advanced and international documentary film production, as well as serving at different times as head of the film/video program and Director of International Programs for the Bellisario College.

Bird’s creative credits include Album (2002), which explores a family’s struggles with addiction and dysfunction; and Handmaidens (1995), which looks at abuse and lack of power in the workplace. A feature length documentary: No. 4 Street of Our Lady (2009), looks at the 60-year silence of a family of Holocaust survivors; was made in collaboration with two fellow faculty members and earned numerous accolades, including a Cine Golden Eagle Award, a Silver Telly and was honored at an Academy Award-qualifying festival.
