Dr. Francesca Sobande, a lecturer in digital media studies and director of the BA Media, Journalism and Culture program at Cardiff University, will discuss digital racism and racial capitalism related to online (re)presentations of Black people and associated marketplace logics, digital practices and (re)mediations of Blackness in the service of brands. A panel of leading scholars in communication will discuss the forthcoming book “Experiencing the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Children, Peace Communication and Socialization” by Yael Warshel, assistant professor of telecommunications and media industries, research associate in the Rock Ethics Institute, and affiliate faculty of international affairs, international and comparative education, African Studies, and Middle Eastern studies at Penn State. Community activist and educator Rosalind Pichardo and documentary filmmaker Tony Heriza will talk about the relationship of journalists and documentarians to their subjects when telling the stories of marginalized communities. What is the role of the journalist? What is their responsibility? How does it feel to have your life reported, photographed and documented? Reporters need to consider their purpose when choosing to tell these stories and how should the consent of a subject be addressed? What is the intersection of truth and fairness and responsibility?
