Celebration and special event for the Penn State Washington Program.

A director of student programs for The American Pavilion and an independent producer will conduct an informational presentation focused on the film industry in early November on the University Park campus of Penn State. Michael Bremer and Mark Lindsay will participate in the free public session titled “Where Passion Becomes Opportunity” at 6 p.m. Nov. 4, in 160 Willard Building. The event is presented by the College of Communications’ Multicultural Affairs Office.

Free public lecture featuring Alexandra Levit, president of president of Inspiration at Work, a business and workplace consulting firm. She has written six career advice books and is a former columnist for the Wall Street Journal. She will provide valuable insight into the job market and career planning for students that plan to enter the workforce. Her session and visit are sponsored by the Graduate and Professional Student Association.

What risks are involved for scientists and scholars who decide to maintain an active presence on popular Internet forums and social media sites? This workshop examines scientists like Neil DeGrasse Tyson and other science communicators, looking at both the potential benefits and drawbacks when research dissemination and discussion moves beyond peer review publication.

"Creativity in the Confines" -- A Look at Pharma/Healthcare Advertising featuring Michael Liebowitz, copy writer for The CemetBloc in New York City, who will discuss the challenges of developing creative advertising and marketing content for pharmaceutical and health care clients. Event sponsored by the AdClub.

Meeting of Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) featuring Kristen Prazenica, communications specialist for Siemens Financial Services. Free public session is open to PRSSA members and non-members.

Free public screening of "A Wing and A Prayer," the documentary directed and produced by Boaz Dvir, a senior lecturer in the College of Communications. The film tells the story of a secret 1948 operation to prevent a second Holocaust. A post-screening discussion features Dvir, film faculty member Richie Serman and aerospace engineering faculty member Mark Maughmer. Session presented by the Penn State Student Film Organization and University Libraries.

A free public lecture by Karma Chaves, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin, will focus on coalition-building across activisms and how to apply strategizing techniques to foster alliances beween social movement groups. The lecture is sponosred by the Women's Studies Graduate Organization.

A free panel discussion providing a behind-the-scenes look at the changing world of journalism. Leading journalists discuss how the media is changing and what it means for communicating science to the public and policymakers. They will share their personal perspectives on how to get your stories told, what makes a good science story, and the “do’s and don’ts” of dealing with journalists. This lively session will encourage Q and A.
